‘Palestine: Khawa’ Zine by BB and Jorj Goss

Palestine: Khawa is a collection of 58 photographs documenting everyday life in Palestinian cities and refugee camps: working class struggle, popular resistance and tattoos.
This is a survey of street portraits, passing moments and omnipresent signs and symbols of struggle against Israel’s brutal illegal occupation in the West Bank. The moments presented were captured between the streets of ancient cities like Al-Quds, Al-Khalil, Beit Laham and the roads of refugee camps like Aida and Al-Azza, Dheisheh, Balata, Jenin, and beyond to the hills of Masafer Yatta.
The tattoos featured – some homemade, all proudly displayed – mix symbols of strength and resistance that alert the world to the bearer’s preparedness to die before submitting to humiliation, with personal tributes to martyrs, mothers and brotherly love.
These images were taken over four trips between 2022 and 2023 by Jorg Goss, a British photojournalist, and BB, a Welsh writer and radio-maker who crossed paths later by chance, realised how many of the same alleyways they had walked, and began a dialogue. The series of accompanying texts reflect on the specific shape of a solidarity rooted in these memories and experiences, and provide further context drawn from testimony and conversations with those featured and other comrades on the ground who shared stories of defiance, grief, care, and joy; from resistance fighters and former prisoners to community organisers and the youth, the next generation.
The title, Khawa, refers to that which is achieved in defiance, in spite of everything, and is used as a humble salute to the steadfastness of the people and places shown.
